Isao Kumano, one of Japan’s top mastering engineers, crafted the SMB-01L with audio professionals in mind. His goal: reproduce large studio-monitoring sound in a headphone.
The new SMB-01L utilizes a driver unit with a larger diameter, further enhancing PHONON’s signature bass-monitoring capabilities. The high-end 50mm unit, FOSTER Electric Inc.’s cutting-edge MT050A, features a powerful magnetic circuit and a “free edge” structure that brings a quantum improvement to the reproduction of raw sounds and increasing presence. PHONON extensively tested various reference materials during the developmental stages to ensure the best acoustic balance for all genres of music.

PHONON released the SMB-02, our signature headphone model, in 2011. The Phonon 4000 followed in 2015, a compact and foldable mobile version of the SMB-02 perfect for enjoying top quality sound on the go.
Isao Kumano thought he had reached near perfection in the SMB-02, and even eight years after its release he had no plans to create additional models—that all changed when Kumano discovered Foster Electric Inc.’s new innovative 50mm driver unit MT050A. The driver’s “bio-dyna diaphragm,” made of bio-cellulose material, models the sound structure of a large speaker and features a “free-edge” structure that allows for a higher resolution and dynamic range. The SMB-01L was born.
Recording engineers need a monitoring environment that allows them to perceive “flat” sound (flat in terms of frequency response).
